Lecture 1 - An overview of Geography

The word Geography is derived from two Greek words “Geo”(meaning Earth) and “Graphos” (meaning description).

The subject Geology and Geography, both very different.

The name Geography was coined by Eratosthenes, a Greek scholar.

Geography can be divided into 3 parts-

1)    Physical Geography

c.    Hydrogeology

d.    Soil geography

2)    Human Geography

a.    Cultural/ Social Geography

b.    Population/ Settlement Geography

c.    Economic Geography

d.    Historical Geography

e.    Political Geography

3)    Bio-geography

b.    Zoo-Geography

c.    Ecology/Ecosystem

d.    Environmental Geography
