1st Week of November, 2021
- ‘Vax’ has been chosen as the Word of the Year for 2021 by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). In 2021, Vax which in turn refers to ‘Vaccine’ or ‘Vaccination’ repeatedly appeared in the news, and other written media more than any other word. The appearance of words related to Vax such as ‘Vaccinate’ have increased 34 times and ‘Vaccination’ have increased 18 times.
- Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) is annually observed across India on 31st October to mark the birth anniversary of Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, endeared as ‘Sardar’, the First Deputy Prime Minister of India and the first Home Minister of India.
- Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) – Ministry of Earth Science, launched India’s 1st Manned Ocean Mission ‘Samudrayan’ from the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
- On 4th November, the Government of the United Kingdom (UK) unveiled a £5 coin to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Diwali. This is the 1st time the UK government is releasing a coin on Mahatma Gandhi
- The Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav has launched an online dashboard- the “Climate Equity Monitor” (CME) to assess equity in climate action, inequalities in emissions, energy and resource consumption across the world. It was launched in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, 2021 in Glasgow (United Kingdom).

- Union Minister of State Civil Aviation General, V K Singh launched India’s 1st Centre for Excellence in Research on Drone/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology and Artificial Intelligence at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, Assam.
- Meghalaya state observed the ‘Wangala’, the festival of 100 Drums Festival. It is a post-harvest festival of the Garos tribe which is being held every year to honor ‘Saljong’, the Sun God of Garos, which also marks the end of the harvest season.
- Astronaut Wang Yaping has become the first Chinese woman to walk in space following the completion of her 6-hour stint outside the Tiangong space station, as a part of its ongoing construction.
- The renowned academician and psychologist Koneru Ramakrishna Rao passed away due to age-related illness. Ramakrishna Rao was a recipient of Padma Shri Award in the year 2011, under the ‘Literature and Education category’. Ramakrishna Rao was a former Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (AP-SCHE).
- National Cancer Awareness Day is annually observed across India on November 7th with an aim to create awareness about the prevention and early detection of cancer.The observance of National Cancer Awareness Day on November 7th also marks the birth anniversary of Polish-French physicist and chemist, Marie Curie, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 for Physics, in 1911 for Chemistry.
- Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) an Indian physicist who is well known for the discovery on the scattering of light was born at Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu on 7th November 1888. 7th November 2021 marks the 133rd birth anniversary of CV Raman the first Indian to be conferred with a Nobel Prize in Physics (1930) “for his work on the scattering of light and for the discovery of the effect (Raman Effect) named after him”.
- United Nations (UN)’s International Week of Science and Peace (IWOSP) is annually observed across the globe during the week in which November 11th falls. The observance of the International Week of Science and Peace increases the contribution and cooperation in the application of science in promoting science and peace.
- National Education Day is annually celebrated on 11th November to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India. The day is celebrated for his contributions towards education and to create awareness in education.India celebrated the 133rd birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna – Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on 11th November 2021.
3rd Week of November, 2021
- India’s first ‘grass conservatory’ or ‘germplasm conservation centre’ with an area of 2 acres was inaugurated at Ranikhet in Almora district of Uttarakhand. This conservatory is funded under the Central Government’s CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) scheme and is developed by the research wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department.
- On 19th November 2021 Karthika Purnima, which is also known as Boita Bandana is celebrated at various water bodies of Odisha. Devotees were largely seen on the banks of Bindusagar lake, Kuakhai and Daya rivers to perform the boat-sailing ritual.
- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) celebrated its 75th anniversary on 12th November 2021 with a special ceremony organised at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. Eiffel Tower in Paris, France displayed “75 years” along with the UNESCO logo to celebrate the 75th anniversary of UNESCO.
- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres appointed Shombi Sharp of the United States (US), a sustainable development expert, as the UN Resident Coordinator in India.
- Abdalla Hamdok was reappointed as the Prime Minister of Sudan after signing a political declaration to end the current political crisis with Abdel Fattah AlBurhan, general commander of the Sudanese Armed Force.
- Renowned historian and Padma Vibhushan recipient Balwant Moreshwar Purandare passed away due to pneumonia in Pune, Maharashtra at the age of 99
- The ‘International Day of Tolerance’ is annually observed by the United Nations (UN) on the 16th of November. The day marks the signing of the ‘Declaration of Principles of Tolerance by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on 16th November 1995.
- National Press Day is annually observed across India on November 16th to mark the presence of an independent and responsible press in India. The day also aims to highlight the importance of the independent press, the 4th pillar of democracy.
- The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India observed the first ever Audit Diwas on 16th November 2021 at the CAG office premises, Delhi. The Audit Diwas is observed to mark the historic origin of the institution of CAG in 1860. The day also highlights the contribution of CAG towards governance, transparency and accountability.
4th Week of November, 2021
- The Kulgam district administration and the Department of Tourism, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) organized the 1st ever Aharbal Festival at Kulgam, J&K to promote tourism in Kashmir, particularly at the Aharbal waterfall.
- Keralite Dr S K Sohan Roy, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder of Aries Group of Companies has become the first Indian to be honored with the Knighthood of Parte Guelfa for his humanitarian and Environmental protection efforts in business and movies.
- Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development 2021 is awarded to Pratham, a civil society organization (CSO) which is dedicated to improving the quality of education among underprivileged children in India and across the world. The awardee was selected by an international jury chaired by former Chief Justice of India T S Thakur.
- The Collins Dictionary has selected the term ‘NFT’, the short for ‘Non-Fungible Token’, as the word of the year 2021. According to Collins, NFT is defined as a unique digital certificate, registered in a blockchain, that is used to record the ownership of an asset such as an artwork or a collectible.
- National Milk Day is annually observed across India on 26th November to mark the birth anniversary of Dr.Verghese Kurien, India’s ‘Father of White Revolution’.The day also aims to create awareness about the importance of milk and dairy products as a global food.

- United Nations (UN)’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is annually observed across the globe on November 25th to create awareness about the violence and abuse against women and girls around the world. The global theme of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2021 is “Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now!”
