1st Week of October, 2021

  • India hosted the 2nd edition of Global FinTech Festival (GFF) 2021, the World’s largest virtual fintech festival from September 28 to 30, 2021. GFF 2021 is organized by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Fintech Convergence Council (FCC) and Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) along with Payments Council of India (PCI).

  • India was positioned at an overall rank of 59th among 110 countries in Digital Quality of Life Index 2021. This is 2 positions lower than the 57th rank secured by India in the 2020 Index.

  • American scientists David Julius and LebaneseAmerican molecular biologist Ardem Patapoutian won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to German chemist Benjamin List and British chemist David W.C. MacMillan for the development of a precise new and ingenious tool for molecular construction: asymmetric organocatalytic.

  • Former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida (64 years old) has been elected as the president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and set to become the next and the 100th Prime Minister of Japan.He will be succeeding Yoshihide Suga, who stepped down as Japan’s PM.

  • On the occassion of Gandhi Jayanti (October 2, 2021), Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav launched a web portal called ‘Wetlands of India Portal’

  • United Nations ’s World Maritime Day (WMD) is annually observed across the globe during the last Thursday of September to recognize the contribution of the international maritime industry towards the world’s economy and sustainable development. World Maritime Day 2021, the 44th World Maritime Day, falls on 30th September 2021.

  • In India, Wildlife Week is annually observed from October 2nd to 8th across the country with an aim to protect and preserve the flora and fauna of India. 2021 Wildlife Week, the 67th edition, is being celebrated with the theme ‘Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet’.

  • United Nation’s World Space Week is annually observed across the globe from 4th to 10th October to commemorate contributions and achievements made in the field of space science and technology.This week celebrates the historical role of women in space and aims to inspire the next generation of young girls to pursue their dreams in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and space.

  • Assam Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya launched India’s first e-Fish market application named ‘Fishwaale’. The app was developed by Aqua Blue Global Aquaculture Solutions Pvt Ltd, in collaboration with the Assam fisheries department.

     

2nd Week of October, 2021

  • Telangana Celebrated Bathukamma festival on 6th October 2021. Bathukamma, a part of Dasara festivities, is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated predominantly in the state of Telangana and in some parts of Andhra Pradesh (AP). The Bathukamma festival celebrates the relationship between earth, water and the humans. Bathukamma means ‘Goddess of Life’.

  • Journalists Maria Ressa & Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov won the Nobel Peace Prize 2021 for their efforts to protect the freedom of expression, the precondition of democracy and lasting peace.

  • For the first time in the history, Indian table tennis contingent has won 3 Bronze medals in the 2021 Asian Table Tennis Championship organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) at Doha, Qatar between 28th September and 5th October 2021.

  • Indian Air Force Day is annually observed across India on 8th October to increase awareness about the Indian Air Force, an organisation that works towards strengthening national security. The day marks the establishment of the Indian Air Force on 8th October 1932.

  • United Nations (UN)’s International Day of the Girl Child has been annually observed across the globe on October 11th to highlight the need to address the challenges faced by girls across the globe.

  • United Nations (UN)’s World Post Day is annually observed across the globe on October 9th to commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.The day aims to create awareness about the role of the postal sector in the everyday life of people across the globe and its contribution to the social and economic development of the countries.

  • United Nations (UN)’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) is annually observed across the globe on October 13th to promote the culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction and to recognize the progress towards reducing disaster risk and loss of lives, livelihoods and health.

     

3rd Week of October, 2021

  • An Indian Social Enterprise ‘Takachar’, under the leadership of Vidyut Mohan was named as the winner of inaugural ‘2021 Earthshot Prize’ that was created by the United Kingdom’s Prince William to reward people fighting to save planet earth.
  • Reliance Industries Tops in Indian Firm, Ranked 52nd in Forbes’ World’s Best Employer Rankings 2021
  • National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC), the country’s largest iron ore producer and also a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Steel, received a “Gold Award” in the Environmental Sustainability category and NMDC’s Kumaraswamy Iron Ore Mine received a “Platinum Award” in the Environmental Management category.
  • Russian Opposition leader, lawyer and anti-corruption activist, Alexei Navalny was awarded the ‘Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought’
  • Sandra Mason is Elected as the 1st ever President of Barbados and he replaced Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State
  • China Launched 1st Solar Exploration Satellite and Shenzhou-13 on a 6-month Space Station Mission
  • South Korea launched its first domesticallydeveloped space rocket – “Nuri”
  • United Nations (UN)’s World Food Day is annually observed across the globe on October 16th to create awareness about the section of people across the globe that suffer from extreme hunger and the need to ensure healthy diets for all.
  • United Nations (UN)’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is annually observed across the globe on October 17th to create awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and to ensure that the human rights of those living in poverty are not violated.
  • Police Commemoration Day is annually observed across India on October 21st to remember and pay tribute to the police personnel who died in the line of duty. In 2020, Police Commemoration Day paid tribute to the personnel who lost their lives due to the COVID19 pandemic.
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu awarded the ‘Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi’ award to 3 recipients – Assam branch of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, German based Assamese litterateur Dr. Nirod Kumar Barooah and Shillong Chamber Choir at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra.

 

 

4th Week of October, 2021

  • Rajasthan has ranked 2nd after Karnataka on the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI)2020, which was released by the Union Ministry of Power. The State Energy Efficiency Index 2020 was developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE).
  • Narayan Tatu Rane, Union Minister of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) launched ‘SAMBHAV’ an e-national level Awareness programme 2021 to promote the role of entrepreneurship towards the development of India. SAMBHAV will be a one-monthlong initiative under the Ministry of MSME
  • United States Tops and India ranked 9th in world’s top 10 for Climate Tech Investment the name of the report is – ‘Five years on: Global climate tech investment trends since the Paris Agreement’
  • As part of a major rebrand, Facebook Inc has changed its corporate name to Meta in an effort to include its virtual reality vision for the future. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, unveiled his plans to build “Metaverse”, an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment.
  • Dr Rajiv Nigam , Former Chief Scientist, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research-National Institute of Oceanography(CSIR-NIO), Goa is the  First Indian to be Selected for the Joseph A. Cushman Award 2022.
  • TVS Motor Company has been awarded the ‘Outstanding Renewable Energy User’ at the 3rd Edition of India Green Energy Award 2020 by the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE).
  • Tamil Film titled “Koozhangal” (Pebbles) directed by filmmaker Vinothraj PS and produced by Rowdy Pictures of Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara, has been selected as India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards (Oscars 2022).
  • United Nations (UN) Day is annually observed across the globe on 24th October to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations in 1945.24th October 2021 marks the 76th Anniversary of the United Nations.
  • World Polio Day is annually observed across the globe on October 24th to create awareness about the importance of the efforts to eradicate poliomyelitis (polio), an infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.
  • United Nations (UN)’s Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week is annually observed across the globe from 24th October to 31st October to review and celebrate the progress made towards “Media and Information Literacy for All”.
  • Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW) is annually observed across India during the week which marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, which falls on 31st October. Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW) 2021 observes from 26th October 2021 to 1st November 2021 to promote integrity, transparency and accountability amongst public servants and create awareness about the existence, causes and gravity of corruption.
